UK sets non-European pros cap @ 24K, Indians hit

London: Thousands of highly skilled Indian professionals will not be able to take up jobs in Britain since the David Cameron government announced a limit of 24,100 for non-European Union professionals to be allowed until April 2011.

Once the limit of 24,100 is reached, no other Indian or other non-EU professional will be able to take up jobs in Britain.

The controversial annual limit was announced by Home Secretary Theresa May today.

The annual limit is part of the agreement between the Conservative and Liberal Democrats parties, but is likely to be opposed by influential groups such as the High Skilled Migrants Forum.

Indian professionals are among the highest non-EU groups who migrate to Britain to take up jobs in IT, medicine, services and education sectors.

The limit is part of the coalition government's promise to curb immigration to the levels of the 1990s: 'to tens of thousands rather than hundreds of thousands'.

"Introducing a limit on migrants from outside Europe coming here to work is just one of the ways the government intends to achieve this," an official spokesman said.

Details of how the final limit will be delivered will be agreed following a 12-week consultation with trade and industry.

In the meantime, an interim limit will be introduced to ensure there is no rush of applications and the number of work visas issued stays below 2009 levels, he said.

The results of the consultation on the permanent limit will pave the way for fundamental changes to the way in which workers from outside the EU will be chosen to come and work in the UK.

The home secretary also asked the Migration Advisory Committee, the Government's independent adviser on migration issues, to launch a separate consultation into what level the limit should be set at, taking into account social and economic impacts.

"This government believes that Britain can benefit from migration but not uncontrolled migration," May said, adding "I recognise the importance of attracting the brightest and the best to ensure strong economic growth, but unlimited migration places unacceptable pressure on public services".

She underlined the need to have an interim measure to avoid a rush of applications for migrants.

"While we consult on our tough new limit it's important we have an interim measure to avoid a rush of applications for migrants and ensure that the number of work visas issued stays below 2009 levels," May said. Permanent limits on non-EU economic migration routes will be put in place by 1 April 2011. Amazon to provide video through Kindle e-books on iPad-iPhone

San Francisco: Amazon has updated its Kindle application allowing audio and video clips to be embedded in electronic books served up on Apple's popular iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch gadgets. Slightly more than a half-dozen e-books taking advantage of the new technology were available like "Rick Steves' London 2010" and "We Cannot Fail" by Terry Golway.

"We are excited to add this functionality to Kindle for iPad and Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch," Amazon Kindle director Dorothy Nicholls said in a release. "We look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create for Kindle customers using the new functionality of the Kindle apps."

A digital version of "Rose's Heavenly Cakes" featured video tips for baking recipes. "Innovations like these represent the advantages that digital can offer. Advancing our content in this manner is important for our authors and our readers and it will raise the bar on what digital reading can offer for years to come," said Peter Balis, Director of Digital Content Sales at Wiley.

Kindle for Android was available at the online Android Market. Synching technology used by Amazon lets people read Kindle books on an array of devices, switching as they wish. "Our customers tell us they love the convenience of having their Kindle library with them everywhere and their reading synchronized across multiple devices," Nicholls said.
Amazon on Monday also released a free Kindle application in the U.S. for smartphones based on Android software backed by Apple rival Google.Last week, Amazon and U.S. bookstore giant Barnes & Noble cut the prices of their electronic book readers in the face of Apple's iPad momentum in the fledgling market.

Amazon dropped the price of its Kindle e-reader to 189 dollars from 259 dollars. The cheapest iPad, a multi-purpose tablet computer that features a color e-reader compared with the black-and-white "e-ink" Kindle devoted exclusively to digital books, costs 499 dollars.

Significant growth in H1B visa recovery

Bangalore: The number of H1 visas issued in the year to June 25, 2010 stood at 55,477, as compared to 55,050 in the same period for the previous year. Likewise, there has been an increase in L visas too, from 31,314 to 35,504 in the same period, reports Ishani Duttagupta from The Economic Times.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the quota for H1B visas for 2011 is anticipated to get consumed by August 2010 and the PhD and graduate students H1B quota by the end of July 2010.

Minister, Counselor for Consular Affair at U.S. Embassy, James W. Herman said, "We expect the rise to continue in the remaining months of this financial year. There was a bottoming out last year because of the economic downturn. But now there's an upswing,"

The H1B Cap quota's permanence for eight months in the financial year 2011 signifies the economic downfall. India companies like TCS, Infosys and Satyam who were users of the U.S. work permit visa were removed from the list.

The work permit visa's 30 percent increase in China is due to the fact that, "The higher growth in China than India is probably because we issue shorter duration visas in China," adds Herman.

In order to restrict the cases of visa forgery, the U.S. department of homeland security included more people across India with honed skills in complex law enforcement procedure

Jobseekers' reference check most important for employers: Study

New York: Smart resume and impressive interview needs to be combined with strong references as reference check can be the real deal maker or breaker for job aspirants, says a latest study.

On an average, 21 percent of job seekers are taken out of consideration by managers after a check of professional references, according to a survey conducted by the staffing service firm OfficeTeam in the US.

OfficeTeam conducted a survey, which included telephone interviews with more than 1,000 senior managers at companies with 20 or more employees.

The report said that 36 per cent of the employers who get in touch with the references are most interested in description of candidates' past job duties and experience of potential employees. While an additional 31 per cent find out about job seeker' strengths and weaknesses.

Out of the rest, 11 per cent of hiring personnels try to seek confirmation of a job title and dates of employment from job seeker, 8 per cent of them want to ask about description of workplace accomplishments. And the other 7 per cent want to get a sense of the applicant's preferred work culture.

"When hiring managers narrow the field to a few potential candidates, the reference check often becomes the deciding factor," said Office Team Executive Director Robert Hosking.

"To distinguish themselves from the competition, job seekers should assemble a solid list of contacts who can persuasively communicate their qualifications and professional attributes," he added.

Besides, the report offers some tips for creating a reference list that works in favour of people looking for a job. The most important thing is to wisely select individuals who can discuss your abilities and experience that directly relates to the position, not just those with the most impressive job titles.

In addition, job seekers must provide clear contact information of the references, including their names, titles, daytime phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

Hackers to encash from ATM security flaws

Bangalore: Flaws have been detected in the automated teller machines (ATM's) design that has made these ARMs vulnerable to hackers and the cash dispensers may have to let go off their cash holdings.

The method for 'jackpotting' ATMs will be demonstrated by Barnaby Jack, head of research at Seattle-based, security firm IOActive Labs at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas to be held on July 28.

"ATMs are not as secure as we would like them to be. Barnaby has a number of different attacks that make all the money come out," said Jeff Moss, founder of the Black Hat conference and a member of President Obama's Homeland Security Advisory Council.

Diebold and NCR are the world's biggest ATM manufacturers. Moss feels that, inorder to raise awareness of the problems among ATM operators and keep them prepared to secure themselves from such problems, there is a need to go public and communication ports that are sometimes accessible from outside an ATM is a potential route of attack.

"People are starting to realize that hardware products do have security vulnerabilities. Parking meters, ATMs, everything that has electronics in it can be broken. A lot of times a hardware product is just a computer in a different shell," said Joe Grand, a hardware security expert.

When Singh speaks, people listen: Obama

Toronto: Obama, particularly, had a lot of praise for Dr. Singh. "I can tell you that here at G20, when the prime minister speaks, people listen," he said, adding it was because of his deep knowledge of economic issues, the nuances of India's rise as a world power and its commitment towards global peace and prosperity.

Indian PM Dr.Manmohan Singh said it was his privilege to enjoy Obama's friendship, and assured that he was waiting to welcome the US president and his family to India so that they could also see for themselves the transformations the nation was undergoing.

The U.S. President also recalled that the State dinner hosted by him for Dr. Singh " the first for his presidency" was "wonderful" and that it had set the tone for India-U.S. ties that they had both termed as a strategic partnership.

"We want to make sure that in addition to government-to-government ties, we were initiating people-to-people ties," he said, adding emphasis also remained on how to get the businesses of the two side to work together.

Dr. Singh, on his part, also praised Obama no length and said it was because of him that the strategic partnership between India and the U.S. was getting a new thrust, meaning and endeavour.

"You are a role model for millions and millions of people all over the world," said the Prime Minister said of Obama, almost 30 years his junior. "Your life history is a history that inspires millions of people everywhere."

Praising the statesmanship of Dr. Manmohan Singh and the rise of India, U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday said he was "looking forward" and "excited" about visiting India with First Lady Michelle later this year.

Personally thanking Dr. Manmohan Singh and wife Gurcharan Kaur for their friendship, Obama also hoped his visit to India ' scheduled for the early part of November' would be extremely productive for the two sides.

"It is a trip that I'm very much looking forward to," said Obama, before holding talks with Dr. Singh after the conclusion of the G20 Summit that also saw the convergence of views expressed by India and the U.S.

"We are also just excited because of the tremendous cultural, as well as political and social and economic examples, that India is providing the world and has in the past," said the U.S. President.
