World's tallest apartment building in Mumbai by 2014

Mumbai will have the world's tallest residential building, nearly half a km in height, by 2014, providing an unhindered view of the city from all sides.
City-based realty group Lodha Developers will collaborate with two New York-based firms to build an over 450 metre residential tower at Worli in south-central Mumbai at a cost of Rs.2,000 crore ($424.67 million), the company said here Tuesday.
'The project has been christened World One and will be built on a 17-acre site at Worli (south-central Mumbai). It will include a 117-storeyed tower, around 1,450 feet, which will be the world's tallest residential building,' the firm's managing director Abhisheck Lodha told media persons here.
The World One complex, which will have two more towers, shall offer 300 exclusive 3-4 bedroom flats, lavish villas with private swimming pools and a few duplex suites.
'The unique 360 degrees curved design will enable all the residents an unrestricted view of entire Mumbai from all sides,' he added.
Lodha Developers has tied up with New York's architectural firm, Pei Cobb Free & Parners, and structural consultants, Leslie E. Robertson Associates, for the prestigious project which will be a landmark in Mumbai.
The construction work on the project will start in a couple of months and it is expected to be completed by 2014, Lodha said.
Each housing unit in the building, which will dwarf the existing tallest residential towers in the world, including even Q1 in Gold Coast (Australia), currently the world's tallest. It will cost upwards of Rs.7.50 crore ($1.5 million), he said.
The flat sales/bookings shall start by June-end.
The complex will offer world-class amenities for the occupants, including a 3-level club-house and spa.
The project is estimated to use over 250,000 cubic metres cement-concrete, 35,000 metric tonnes of steel rebars, 40,000 square metres of glass, 18 high-speed lifts, each travelling at nearly 3 floors per second.
According to Lodha, a significant aspect of the World One project will be rating of Gold Leed Certified Building by the Green Building Council. It will be the only 100-plus storey building in the world to get this coveted certification for its high-level of environmental care.
The key eco-friendly measures it will incorporate are: 100 percent water harvesting and recycling, using VRV air-conditioning and solar energy for common areas and heating, thus slashing electricity consumption by over 40 percent, and waste segregation and recycling.
For the luxurious in-house feel, all the components for the kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and bedrooms shall come from Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and France.
Lodha said the World One project would give a icon to the vibrant city on the lines of Paris' Eiffel Tower or Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers.

IPhone 4 Makes Video Call, How About Voice?: Rich Jaroslovsky

June 8 (Bloomberg) -- For better or worse, the announcement of a new Apple Inc. gadget has passed into the realm of cultural phenomena: the rumors, the air of expectation, the controversies. A century ago, the equivalent might have been the premiere of “The Rite of Spring,” with Stravinsky in the Steve Jobs role. Not counting the opening-night riot, of course.
At Apple’s product-unveiling extravaganzas, what isn’t said is sometimes as interesting as what is. Yesterday’s iPhone 4 debut, at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, proved no exception. While it provided much that was new, it also left a number of key questions for us to puzzle over in the weeks and months to come.
While a proper review of the new phone will have to wait until closer to its June 24 release, I was able to spend a little while playing with it after yesterday’s announcement. On first impression, it is, not surprisingly, beautiful. By now, Apple knows how to design these things, and design them well.
The iPhone 4 is ever-so-slightly longer and ever-so- slightly heavier than the current top-of-the-line model, the 3GS. But it is by no means heavy or awkward, and, at 24 percent thinner, feels great in the hand. The rounded edges of the current design give way to a more squared-off stainless steel frame that, Jobs said, will also aid in wireless reception.
Dropped Calls
That raises one of those interesting unanswered questions: Will the new design help remedy the iPhone’s biggest shortcoming, dropped calls?
The device has always been miserable at a telephone’s most basic function, especially in such critical markets as New York and San Francisco. It’s never been entirely clear how much of the blame belongs to AT&T Inc.’s overstretched network, and how much to the fact that the iPhone was engineered by a computer company with no previous cell-phone experience.
The Apple representatives who demonstrated the phone for journalists yesterday were primed to say as little as possible on the subject. The new design may help increase signal strength a bit, they said, but they made no claims for improvement in the ability to complete or maintain a voice connection.
Improving the iPhone’s performance as a phone may be the most important step Apple could take to sell more of them, short of making it available on the more robust Verizon Wireless network -- which was another of those things left unsaid at yesterday’s event. While rumors of an Apple-Verizon deal have been swirling for months, there was nary a word about it.
Sharing the Load
I’ve long had a pet theory that AT&T would be better off if a second U.S. carrier also offered the Apple handset; it might then be able to share the burden of satisfying iPhone users’ insatiable hunger for bandwidth-intensive data services. There’s no sign, though, that AT&T agrees with me. For now, the company remains the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone and iPad, and I bet that if the iPhone does eventually show up on Verizon --or the smaller T-Mobile or Sprint networks, for that matter --it won’t be any time soon.
Speaking of data-intensive applications, the buzziest feature Jobs disclosed for the iPhone 4 was video telephony, making use of a new, front-facing camera. Cool, yes, but there will be some important limitations on it. Not only must both parties be on iPhone 4s, they also must be on Wi-Fi connections; AT&T and its wireless-carrier brethren at least initially won’t allow the service over their networks. Will they ever? If so, when? Again, the event provided no clue.
Late Nights at Skype?
On the other hand, if I worked for Skype, I’d have been up late last night analyzing the impact of Apple’s new service, which it calls FaceTime, on my business model. My guess is that Skype can join Cisco Systems Inc.’s Flip unit on the list of companies with oxen being gored by the iPhone 4.
Flip’s new $279.99 SlideHD is a digital camcorder with a wide, bright screen that fits in a shirt pocket and comes with easy-to-use tools for editing and sharing videos. The iPhone 4 is $199 (on a two-year AT&T contract for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage, $299 for 32 gigabytes), and Apple’s new $4.99 iMovie iPhone app promises to also provide easy editing and sharing tools. And, oh yeah, it makes phone calls too. Sometimes, at least.
The event left a number of other unanswered questions as well. Will the iPhone 4 deliver its promised improvement in battery life? I have my hopes, based in part on the iPad’s terrific power management; the iPhone 4 is built around the same A4 chip. And how much will the improvements in screen technology Jobs spent so much time touting yesterday matter? To me, the new display seemed only an incremental improvement, though in fairness I am among the optically challenged.
Perhaps the biggest unspoken question at yesterday’s event, for investors as much as consumers, was, “How’s Steve?” Now more than ever, it’s clear that Jobs is the auteur of Apple, and his health and the company’s future remain inextricably intertwined.
To that question, at least, we got something of an answer. The Apple chief executive, wearing his trademark black turtleneck, commanded the stage for two hours, by all appearances loving every minute of it. No vitamin shot could provide a bigger boost.

Bharti ready for the next leg with Zain

Ending years of trying to aggressively expand its overseas footprint, Bharti Airtel finally closed the $10.7 billion (about Rs 48,000 crore) acquisition of Zain's Africa operations.

Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Group, is clearly upbeat and confident that Bharti's biggest acquisition is set to take the company into the next orbit. As they announced that it had completed the formalities of the acquisition of Zain, Bharti's famed trio expressed confidence that the next level of growth is round the corner.

“I think we have cracked the code in Nigeria. I cannot obviously detail it to you but Manoj Kohli and I believe we have cracked the code,” said Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Group.

There are three clear targets for Bharti as it steps into Africa. It is looking to achieve five billion dollars in revenue from Africa, two billion dollars in EBITDA from the continent even as it wants 100 million subscribers from the continent of hope.

Markets have been concerned that Bharti's balance sheet is too debt heavy as this acquisition has come at a time when the company is already looking at a huge cash payout in the recent spectrum auction. The bean counter himself allayed fears of India's largest telecom company being overleveraged.

This week some key people, including Manoj Kohli, will relocate to Kenya to run the new entity. The Airtel brand could be launched by October, which will give wheels to the first Indian global consumer brand.

Bhopal gas tragedy: America's double standards, say some

Hours after a verdict drove home the point that justice, after 25 years, is nowhere on the horizon of a city left gasping for breath, America's reaction to the sentence in the Bhopal gas tragedy seemed tactless, even insulting. US Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake said, "I don't expect this verdict to reopen any new inquiries or anything like that. On the contrary, we hope that this is going to help to bring closure, to the victims and their families."

The verdict was not unexpected. The court in Bhopal delivered the maximum sentence of two years in prison for eight Indian executives who faced charges of criminal negligence for the world's worst industrial disaster. Bail was granted immediately.

Stung, India is now asking why a series of decisions by different governments and the Supreme Court allowed the case against Union Carbide to turn into one where the punishment is no greater than what's awarded for an ordinary road accident.

And as politicians, investigating officials and former judges once involved with the case offer differing versions of why they're not to blame, many activists are looking outwards -  to America - where the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is being dealt with so differently.

President Barack Obama, criticised in different editorials for, initially not acting quickly or aggressively enough, spoke a different language on Monday.

In an interview to NBC News' show "Today', Obama said he wanted to know "whose ass to kick" over the oil spill, adding that if BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward worked for him, he would have fired him by now over his response to the 50-day-old spill

There is, to many Indians, especially those fighting for a quarter of a century for the rights of the Bhopal gas tragedy, much to envy and to counter, in the America on display for its own crisis versus Bhopal's.

Eleven people were killed when British Petroleum's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in Gulf of Mexico.  Close to 8000 died on the night of Dec 2 1984 in Bhopal, and in the years since then, the number has climbed to close to 20,000.

The oil spill has caused extensive damage to marine life, birds and the US coastline in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. In Bhopal, 26 years after the gas leak, the soil and the water are still contaminated, with dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals, and thousands still suffering the aftereffects.

British Petroleum has already paid 69 million dollars, just as first installment for the damages caused. That figure could multiply several times, with the company's liability still being decided. In contrast, Union Carbide paid just $ 470 million in compensation for the deaths it caused. That's less than $500 dollars per victim, insufficient even to cover medical treatment costs for those who survived.

When asked about the possible extradition of Warren Anderson, the man who headed Union Carbide at the time of the Bhopal gas tragedy, America's stand was clear.

"As a matter of policy, we never discuss extradition," said Robert Blake.

A US court rejected a formal extradition request for Anderson in 2003, allegedly on the grounds that under US laws, only someone personally culpable for a crime can be extradited. Anderson did not fit the bill.

In the case of British Petroleum, America is launching a criminal investigation that may lead to prosecution of top executives.

Double standards, say many, who say America is avoiding its responsibilities in a case where the facts speak for themselves.

Why can't Raju attend court? CBI questions

Hyderabad: Doctors at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has filed a report to court saying that the mastermind behind Satyam scam B Ramalinga Raju's condition is alarming and he runs high risk of contracting severe infections if moved out of the hospital.

According to a report by Suresh Dharaur of Tribune News Service, the visitors' book at the hospital shows that Raju had received 270 visitors in three months. In the wake of this CBI, which is probing the Rs. 7,800 crore scam, has accused that Raju is avoiding court on grounds of feigning sickness.

The report has suggested that Raju is not well that he could not be produced before the special court which is hearing the case nor could he run the risk of facing the investigators.

According to the NIMS report, Raju is suffering from Hepatitis C, inflammation of the lungs and also heart disease and needs to stay in the hospital for a few more weeks. Citing the hospital's visitors' log, CBI said that Raju has been meeting large number of visitors in contravention of the rules and the court orders.

In the wake of CBI's doubts regarding Raju's health, the court has directed the hospital authorities to submit a detailed report about his condition. The investigating agency has filed a petition before the special court seeking his trial through video link. However, Raju, his brother and former Managing Director of Satyam Rama Raju and other accused in the scam, opposed video trial. "It is clear that Raju is avoiding trail on a false ground. When he can see so many visitors in his room and talk to them, why cannot he attend the court?" the CBI Deputy Inspector General V V Lakshminarayana said.

Raju's White Blood Corpuscle (WBC) count was much below normal and had developed complications due to anti-viral treatment, it said. The NIMS report, submitted in March, suggested that it was not possible to produce Raju in the court as his health condition was alarming. "He needs at least four to six weeks to recover from side effects caused by anti-viral treatment for Hepatitis-C. It is not advisable to take him outside the hospital," said the report submitted by Dr Ajit Kumar, Head of Gastroenterology, NIMS.

Ordinary man hacks Indian passport website

Hyderabad: To hack a government run website one need not be a tech savvy. Even a DTP operator can easily hack it and access data. Hyderabad based DTP operator, G. Lathadhara Rao, has hacked the Indian passport website and has managed to remain hidden for over four months without anyone knowing it. He managed to get through the Firewalls and gain access to NIC servers.

Rao used to work at an agency to fill client forms online. During the course of his work, he found bugs in the passport website with the help of which he could access the NIC server and succeeded in submitting the passport applications with confirmed dates under the Tatkal scheme even though the dates were yet to be officially released by the passport authorities.

The cyber intrusion was not meant to steal data of Government departments which have their databanks on NIC servers.

The cyber escapade came to light when Hyderabad police busted a gang of seven persons who were charging a hefty fee for getting confirmed appointments for submitting passport applications under Tatkal scheme.

This incident shows the careless state of security on Government run websites. Luckily, this was a small time guy trying to make money. It could very well have been case of passport applicants database being compromised. Imagine, what would have happened with that kind of information in wrong hands.

India poised to grow by 9 percent in 2011: World Bank

Washington: India's growth is expected to rise to nine percent in 2011 with South Asia poised to become the second-fastest growing region after East Asia & Pacific, says the latest World Bank update.

The region as a whole is expected to grow by about 7 percent in 2010 and nearly 8 percent in 2011, says the South Asia Economic Update 2010, the World Bank's first yearly assessment of the economies of the region released in Colombo Monday.

Contrary to current beliefs, South Asia's particular strengths and forms of global integration-not the lack of it-was a key factor behind its resilience following the financial crisis of 2008, it says.

With emerging markets playing an increasing role in driving growth, integration should be a key component of a sustained and inclusive growth strategy going forward, the report says.

Noting that the drop in growth during the crisis was the smallest among all regions, the report says the region will benefit from new engines of growth and adapting to a "new normal" as emerging markets and Asia drive global growth.

Trade with East Asia and China could potentially triple to reach $450 billion per year.

"The Regional Economic Update expects growth in the region to reach close to pre-crisis peak levels and faster than its high rates of 6.5 percent annually from 2000 to 2007," said Dipak Dasgupta, lead economist and principal author of the report.

"Rising domestic confidence combined with government fiscal and monetary stimulus packages and, in some cases, external assistance is helping stimulate recovery.

"Improved optimism is helping drive the recovery in private spending in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. India's growth is expected to rise to 9 percent in 2011, Bangladesh to 6.4 percent, Bhutan to 7 percent, and Sri Lanka to above 6 percent."

There remain some significant risks in the global environment-slowing worker remittances and exports in a still hesitant and uncertain global recovery, as recent events in Europe show, with volatile commodity prices, and continuing volatility in global capital flows, the report says.

"Over the past fifteen years the region has become much more open-and it appears that the form of openness it has chosen has provided resilience in the face of recent shocks," said Andrew Steer, World Bank Acting Chief Economist for the South Asia Region.

While high-income markets will continue to be important for South Asia, even if at a slower pace than in the past, other emerging markets and regions are also fast-growing and increasingly important partners.

Vodafone to bring iPhone 4 to India by July

Tuesday, 08 June 2010, 16:38 IST

Bangalore: Though Apple's CEO Steve Jobs remains mum on the iPhone 4's India release, Vodafone has blown the whistle that it will release the version in India. The company expects to bring the locked version by next month. Details on the India launch is yet to be revealed.

The Android frenzy in the market may not have gone well with Apple, so at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Apple launched the iPhone 4. The latest model of the iPhone is thinner in size and has new features including a front-facing camera.

The flat body is only 9.3 millimeters thin, 24 percent thinner than the iPhone 3GS at its thickest. It feels great in the hand, and at the keynote Steve Jobs remarked, "Its closest kin is a beautiful old Leica camera. We're going to take the biggest leap since the original iPhone," says Jobs as quoted by Xinhua. The metal buttons, shiny edge, and the way the flat-edged case feels more camera-like when you're shooting pictures, like a particularly slim point-and-shoot.

It's 4.8 ounces, just 0.1 ounces heavier than the iPhone 3GS, an imperceptible difference. The SIM card slot has moved from the top to the side, a micro SIM slot, so changing networks will be lot tougher than earlier.

He added that the new model has a longer battery life that will allow 40 percent more talk time. It features a five megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, Apple's A4 processor and a 3-axis gyro. iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the newest version of the Apple's mobile operating system, which includes over 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers. iOS 4 features Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support and Apple's new iAd mobile advertising platform.

The iPhone 4 will go on sale June 24 in five countries including the US, France, Germany, Britain and Japan, and will be available in 18 more countries in July.

The the 16-gigabyte model will cost $199 in the US and the 32-gigabyte model will cost $299, he said.

Consumers to benefit from Android, Windows battle

Bangalore: The arrival of competition in the form of new operating systems like Android - in a space dominated by Microsoft's Windows - is set to benefit both gadget makers and consumers, reducing prices and giving users more choice.

Personal computer and smartphone firms showed off a range of smartphones running on Google's Android operating system, and detailed plans for PCs with Google's Chrome system at Computex, Asia's largest computing trade show, in Taipei last week, reports Kelvin Soh of Reuters.

Both Google and Microsoft were running full court PR blitzes at Computex, a show dominated by Taiwanese PC firms whose devices usually come pre-installed with operating systems. The newer smartphone and tablet PC spaces could be the first to see true competition, as Google and Microsoft compete with rival products from Apple, Nokia and others.

Android was ranked just ahead of Windows Mobile in the first quarter of this year, with its number of users increasing more than eight-fold from a year ago, according to Gartner. By comparison, the number of users of Microsoft's Windows Mobile system remained largely flat at about 3.7 million users.
